Work in Process
What is an experiment in design and why should designers practice this process? I created a series of experiments and later designed an informal process book with my findings. I chose constraints to follow through with each experiment by randomly choosing attributes out of a hat such as color, texture, typography, material, and manipulation. These would be the foundations for each “experimental sketch.” The process confounded my expectations and challenged my perfectionism and brought great stress and discomfort. Work in Process documents the struggles, triumphs, and vulnerabilities that I faced throughout this process. When we show our less-than-perfect designs, and the messy imperfect part of our process, it gives our colleagues permission to be messy as well.
